About Our Organisation

The Water Authority of Fiji is a corporate body established under the Water Authority of Fiji Act 2007 to make provision for the effective management and administration of the Water and the wastewater systems.

We are responsible for providing access to quality drinking water and wastewater services to over 159,000 and 33,540 residential and non-residential metered customers in the urban areas of Fiji and also setting up water supply systems in rural areas.

Position Objective

The Hydraulic Network Graduate Engineer is responsible for supporting the hydraulic modelling and network analysis functions within WAF’s Asset Management department. The position is pivotal to the optimization and management of water and wastewater infrastructure, ensuring efficient pressure management and distribution system performance. This role integrates both civil engineering and GIS skills, aligning with WAF’s goal of ensuring reliable, sustainable water supply systems.

Key Accountabilities
  1. Hydraulic Modelling Support
    • Assist in the development and maintenance of hydraulic models for water and wastewater networks, ensuring accurate representation of WAF’s infrastructure
    • Conduct hydraulic analysis to optimize network performance, including water distribution, pressure management, and identifying system improvements
    • Work closely with the Modelling Team Leader to ensure the models align with WAF’s long-term asset management strategies
  2. Integration of GIS and Hydraulic Modelling
    • Support the integration of GIS data into hydraulic models, ensuring accurate location and condition of assets such as pipes, treatment plants, and reservoirs
    • Collaborate with the GIS team to ensure the timely updating of infrastructure data, enhancing modelling accuracy and decision-making
    • Develop tools and processes for seamless data transfer between GIS systems and hydraulic modelling platforms
  3. Capacity Building and Development
    • Participate in on-the-job training to develop expertise in hydraulic modelling, focusing on local water supply challenges and solutions
    • Assist in training other WAF staff on hydraulic modelling and the use of related GIS tools
    • Contribute to the development of internal capabilities to reduce reliance on external consultants
  4. Cross-Departmental Collaboration
    • Foster collaboration between the GIS and Modelling teams, ensuring an integrated approach to water network management
    • Provide technical support to other SBUs in WAF, sharing insights gained from hydraulic analysis for better asset management and decision-making
  5. Reporting and Data Management
    • Prepare periodic reports on hydraulic network performance, system improvements, and model updates
    • Ensure that hydraulic modelling data is accurately captured, stored, and accessible for future analysis
    • Provide timely and relevant feedback to superiors for decision-making
  6. Project Participation
    • Assist in projects aimed at improving water distribution and pressure management, contributing technical insights from hydraulic modelling
    • Support initiatives funded by external sources, such as the European Investment Bank (EIB), to develop internal expertise in hydraulic modelling
Qualification and Experience Requirement
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, with a focus on hydraulic modelling and GIS
  • Fresh graduate or up to two years of relevant experience in civil engineering, water systems, or hydraulic modelling
Skills and Abilities
  • Basic understanding of water network design and pressure management
  • Familiarity with GIS platforms and data integration for modelling purposes
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with an ability to solve complex problems
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to make correct judgments
