About Our Organisation

The Water Authority of Fiji is a corporate body established under the Water Authority of Fiji Act 2007 to make provision for the effective management and administration of the Water and the wastewater systems.

We are responsible for providing access to quality drinking water and wastewater services to over 159,000 and 33,540 residential and non-residential metered customers in the urban areas of Fiji and also setting up water supply systems in rural areas.

Position Objective

The Technician-Pump Operator is primarily responsible for the safe and efficient operation of WAF’s water pump station facilities in accordance with the standard operating procedures to ensure that WAF customers receive 24/7 water services in accordance with World Health Organisation (WHO) standards. This position requires work in shifts and reports to the Supervisor Mechanical & Electrical

Key Accountabilities
  • Reliable, effective, efficient and safe Plant operations in Raw Water pump Stations
  • Effective planned preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance and reactive maintenance communicated and implemented for Plant & Assets.
  • Efficient monitoring of pumps and equipment daily at specified intervals.
  • Safe Isolation and Activation of Generators for testing both on and off electrical loading.
  • Assist with Conditional Monitoring for Pump and Motor Vibration and Thermal Hot Spots.
  • Ensure safe electrical isolation and test performed and confirmation provided before any works on Pumps, Generators, Blowers, etc.
  • Lock out tag out practice followed and effective use of isolation safety tags.
  • Technical matters which require attention highlighted to Mechanical & Electrical Team and fixed in a timely manner.
  • Work site and pump house kept clean and tidy at all times with identified risks mitigated in a timely manner.
  • Adherence to site safety regulations in work sites at all times.
  • Knowledge on how to use relevant and required works tools obtained and understood and are competently used to performed duties and work assigned.
  • Record keeping of raw water parameters, faults and major repairs works, as well as pump condition and operation status updated and always maintained.
  • Communication well established with supervisor and relevant WAF departments.
  • Monitoring and reporting on operations efficiency of systems installed and maintenance requirements provided to supervisor.
  • Full compliance with all internal and regulatory requirements always maintained:
  • Statutory and regulatory compliant
  • Compliant with operational procedures
  • Risk compliant
  • All internal and external (if any) reporting requirements in relation to the outcomes of this role understood and correctly executed
    • Robust and relevant periodic reports/documents prepared and submitted as and when requested. This includes daily Plant performance reports and any other and daily/ weekly/ monthly Reports as requested.
    • Superiors provided with useful information combined with analysis and interpretation, for the purpose of decision making.
  • Ad-hoc information request by superiors addressed in a timely manner
  • Cooperation within the team and greater function / department encouraged.
  • Cooperation across functions / departments ensured.
  • Collaboration and leadership to achieve relevant organisational targets and goals.
    • Other related duties assigned by the Supervisor effectively and efficiently addressed

  • Thorough understanding and execution of Pump station Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) ensured.
  • Uphold and maintain a culture of safety targeting Zero Harm in and around the workplace.
  • Accurate and timely reporting of near miss and incidents to superiors.
  • Contribute to Team Meetings providing input and insight.
  • Initiative to improve performance and resolution of complaints in the Work Management System.
  • Uphold and maintain high quality of works minimizing instances of poor workmanship or rework to zero.
  • Provide relevant and timely updates on works assigned by superiors.
  • Carry out any other duties assigned by the Supervisor or Team Leader.
Qualification and Experience Requirement
  • The Applicant must either possess a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical/Electrical or relevant discipline with at least 3 years relevant work experience or Trade Test Certificate Class III in Fitter Machinist, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or relevant discipline with at least 2 years’ experience
Skills and Abilities
  • Possess well developed skills to plan using a systematic approach, to ensure that actions are initiated and results are achieved within the required timeline.
  • General knowledge of the purpose and operations of water utilities.
  • Proven ability to work independently and under minimum supervision and willing to work on shifts and public holidays.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with the team to achieve desired results.
  • Ability to handle complex and unplanned tasks.
  • Ability to operate and maintain plant machineries.
  • Experience with safely operating power tools and equipment with appropriate PP
  • Understanding Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) and practices.
  • Experience in prioritizing tasks to efficiently utilize resources and demonstrate initiative and strategic approach in coping with unexpected situations.
  • Initiative to undertake necessary corrective action within capability with minimal supervision
  • Ability to adapt to changing operational situations by understanding system behaviour and performance
  • Working knowledge as well as experience with good and timely report writing skills.
