About Our Organisation

The Water Authority of Fiji is a corporate body established under the Water Authority of Fiji Act 2007 to make provision for the effective management and administration of the Water and the wastewater systems.

We are responsible for providing access to quality drinking water and wastewater services to over 159,000 and 33,540 residential and non-residential metered customers in the urban areas of Fiji and also setting up water supply systems in rural areas.

Position Objective

The Senior Legal Officer is responsible to the Manager Legal for the advisory services to the Chief Executive Officer and Strategic Business Units within WAF including all legal drafting and representing WAF in legal proceedings brought by or against WAF.

Key Accountabilities

The position will achieve its objective through the following key duties.

  1. drafting and vetting contracts, memorandums of understanding, legal documents, legal submissions, and correspondence within given timelines.
  2. vetting of strategic policies and procedures of other Business Units within WAF to ensure alignment to domestic legislation.
  3. providing effective and efficient advisory services on legal and policy matters to WAF.
  4. handling complex litigation and advisory matters.
  5. assist in providing legal training upon request.
  6. negotiating on behalf of WAF litigation matters upon the Chief Executive Officer’s instruction.
  7. assisting in legal compliance and land matters.
  8. monitor regulatory changes continuously.
  9. supervising and mentoring legal officers and providing training lectures to legal officers and stakeholders.
  10. any other duties assigned by the Manager Legal and Chief Legal & Procurement Officer.
Qualification and Experience Requirement
  • The Applicant must be legally qualified under the Legal Practitioners Act and admitted to the High Court of Fiji with a minimum of 7 years post admission experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Must have excellent communication skills and oral presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of drafting, conducting research and litigation.
  • Must have experience in litigation in the Magistrate Court and High Court.
  • Possess good analytical skills for legal advisory services and representation in court and draft accurate opinions, legal documents and legal submissions.
  • Must have the ability to handle a heavy workload, complete work accurately and according to strict deadlines.
  • Excellent customer service skills for the purpose of interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and meet set deadlines.
  • Ability to contribute to a high performing Unit.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow directions and maintain high standards of professional.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Service oriented approach, with a commitment to supporting the operational / corporate environment of the organisation
