About Our Organisation

The Water Authority of Fiji is a corporate body established under the Water Authority of Fiji Act 2007 to make provision for the effective management and administration of the Water and the wastewater systems.

We are responsible for providing access to quality drinking water and wastewater services to over 159,000 and 33,540 residential and non-residential metered customers in the urban areas of Fiji and also setting up water supply systems in rural areas.

Position Objective

The Technician - Mechanical serves across various Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) departments and is responsible primarily for carrying out mechanical maintenance outcomes on WAF's water and wastewater facilities to ensure that WAF customers receive 24/7 wastewater services in accordance with World Health Organisation (WHO) standards. This position reports to the Technical Officer (Mechanical).

Key Accountabilities
  • Reliable, effective, efficient and safe Mechanical Plant operations in pump workshops, Pump Stations and Treatment facilities.
  • Maintenance, servicing and testing performed efficiently and systematically at specified intervals
    • Safe Isolation and Activation of Generators for testing both on and off electrical loading
    • Assist with Conditional Monitoring for Pump and Motor Vibration and Thermal Hot Spots
    • Ensure Safe Electrical Isolation and test performed, and confirmation provided before any works on Pumps, Generators, Blowers, Etc
      • Isolation Safety Tags placed in visible location
    • Technical matters which require attention highlighted and fixed
  • Installations. maintenance and commissioning of domestic and industrial installations performed and facilitated in accordance with AUS & NZ standards
    • commissioning of water, wastewater pumps, plants, equipment’s and generators performed
    • Water disruption prevented through regular maintenance of WAF Pumps, Generators, Compressors, Blowers and Scrapers
    • Task completed is of good quality
    • Worksite and Workshop kept clean and tidy with identified risks mitigated
  • Maintenance of overhead hoist, cranes in the treatment plants and pump stations attended to in a timely and professional manner with inspection and completion reports furnished and filed for record keeping
  • Electrical & other Technicians assisted on daily tasks assigned and are compliant to the OHS regulations when performing tasks
  • Safety regulations are observed in work sites at all times
  • Work site are kept clean and safe for the pump attendants and members of the public
  • Knowledge on how to use relevant and required works tools obtained and understood and are competently used to performed duties and work assigned
  • Flexibility to change demonstrated and work prioritised in line with complaints received from the division
  • Work Order & Record keeping of faults and major repairs works attended too and completed
  • Timely and quality daily reports and records on all works carried out of all repairs done and materials used submitted to supervisors and are fully informed of;
    • problems challenges and achievement
    • operation inputs for the smooth running of Pump Section
  • Installation and commissioning of domestic and industrial installations in accordance with AUS and NZ standards ensured
  • Efficient and effective repairs and maintenance ensured
    • Mechanical installation planned plant maintenance implemented effectively
      • Planned preventative maintenance
      • Planned corrective maintenance
      • Reactive maintenance
    • Control panel and switchboard maintenance and wiring performs as scheduled
    • Maintenance of high voltage switch gears carried out effectively ensuring WAF provides uninterrupted services
    • Maintenance schedules of all mechanical equipment in the division executed efficiently
  • Inventory management of fittings, parts, mechanical components and critical spares coordinated effectively with superiors/storemen
    • availability of required inventory maintained at all times
  • Coordinating Technicians from other subunits accurately instructed on SOP's for mechanical equipment and machines
  • Monitoring and reporting on operations efficiency of systems installed and maintenance requirements provided to superiors
  • Full compliance with all internal and regulatory requirements maintained at all times
    • Statutory and regulatory compliant

  • All internal and external (if any) reporting requirements in relation to the outcomes of this role understood and correctly executed
    • Robust and relevant periodic reports/documents prepared and submitted as and when requested. This includes daily Plant performance reports and any other and daily/ weekly/ monthly Reports as requested
    • Superiors provided with useful information combined with analysis and interpretation, for the purpose of decision making
  • Ad-hoc information request by superiors addressed in a timely manner

  • Accurate and timely reporting of near miss and incidents to superiors.
  • Contribute to Team Meetings providing input and insight
  • Initiative to improve performance and resolution of complaints in the Work Management System
  • Uphold and maintain high quality of works minimizing instances of poor workmanship or rework to zero.
  • Provide relevant and timely updates on works assigned by superiors
  • Relevant meetings are attended with relevant and effective contributions.
  • Carry out any other duties assigned by the Supervisor or Team Leader.
Qualification and Experience Requirement
  • The Applicant must possess a Certificate III in Welding & Fabrication or Fitting & Machining or Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade (Maintenance), Diesel Fitting Pathway (MEM30205) with 3 years’ experience working on water and wastewater networks.
    OR
  • Trade Test Certificate (Class III) in Fitter Machinist with at least 2 years of demonstrated experience working on water and wastewater networks.
Skills and Abilities
  • At least 2 Years relevant experience on carrying out installation and maintenance works on Pumps, Generators and Diesel-powered engines or 3 years overall experience in mechanical works.
  • Possess well developed skills to plan using a systematic approach, to ensure that actions are initiated and results are achieved within the required timeline.
  • General knowledge of the purpose and operations of water utilities.
  • Proven ability to work independently and under minimum supervision and willing to work on shifts and public holidays.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with the team to achieve desired results.
  • Ability to handle complex and unplanned tasks.
  • Ability to work as a team.
  • Ability to install and maintain mechanical machineries in water and wastewater facilities.
  • Ability to identify, locate and repair faults in machines and equipment’s’.
  • Experience with safely operating power tools and equipment with appropriate PPE
  • Understanding of Traffic Management Plans and Practices while working within the FRA Carriage Way
  • Understanding Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake repair and maintenance on large water mains
  • Ability to undertake repair and maintenance of live assets
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor, prioritize, respond and control effectively in operational situation
  • Experience in prioritizing tasks to efficiently utilize resources and demonstrate initiative and strategic approach in coping with unexpected situations.
  • Initiative to undertake necessary corrective action with minimal supervision
  • Ability to adapt to changing operational situations by understanding system behaviour and performance
  • Working knowledge as well as experience with MS Office software together with good and timely report writing skills.
  • Must have a valid driving license.
