About Our Organisation

The Water Authority of Fiji is a corporate body established under the Water Authority of Fiji Act 2007 to make provision for the effective management and administration of the Water and the wastewater systems.

We are responsible for providing access to quality drinking water and wastewater services to over 159,000 and 33,540 residential and non-residential metered customers in the urban areas of Fiji and also setting up water supply systems in rural areas.

Position Objective

The Technician (Carpenter) is responsible for carrying out carpentry, repair, and maintenance works for WAF properties and facilities, including water and wastewater infrastructure within the Central Eastern Region.

This role supports the upkeep of buildings, treatment plants, pump stations, depots, offices, reservoirs, and associated infrastructure by ensuring all structural and carpentry-related works are delivered efficiently and safely. The position contributes to the overall reliability, safety, and functionality of WAF assets and reports to the Technical Officer Support Services.

Key Accountabilities
  • Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and general carpentry and building maintenance works in a timely and effective manner
  • Undertake repairs and maintenance of WAF facilities including buildings, offices, treatment plants, pump stations, reservoirs, and site structures
  • Support minor construction, refurbishment, and upgrade works across WAF properties and operational sites
  • Assist DMA and Network Teams with repair and maintenance works on the water distribution network as required
  • Undertake reinstatement works (e.g. backfilling, concreting, surface restoration, fencing, and site reinstatement) following network repairs to ensure sites are restored to acceptable standards
  • Attend to facility-related complaints and maintenance requests in coordination with relevant teams
  • Ensure proper site preparation and execution of works in compliance with statutory and safety requirements
  • Safely operate tools, equipment, and machinery in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) procedures
  • Operate WAF vehicles and be able to travel across the Central Eastern Region to attend to maintenance, emergency, and operational works at various sites
  • Maintain full compliance with WAF policies, standards, and legislative requirements
  • Provide timely updates and reporting on completed works to Supervisors for tracking and closure
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to ensure efficient delivery of maintenance and operational services
  • Maintain high standards of workmanship to minimize rework and defects
  • Uphold WAF values and contribute to a culture of Zero Harm
  • Report all incidents, hazards, and near misses promptly
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
Qualification and Experience Requirement
  • The Applicant must either possess a Certificate III in Carpentry & Joinery with 3 years of relevant works experience working in the Water / Wastewater Network
    OR
  • a Trade Test Certificate Class III in the discipline of Carpentry and Joinery with 2 years of demonstrated experience working on water networks or building construction.

    Experience working within the water and wastewater facilitate will be an added advantage.

Skills and Abilities
  • Proven experience in carpentry, building repairs, and general maintenance works
  • Ability to carry out maintenance of structural elements including roofing, doors, windows, formwork, and site infrastructure
  • Experience in using power tools and equipment safely with appropriate PPE
  • Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS)
  • Basic understanding of construction practices, drawings, and site requirements
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and execute tasks efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to respond to maintenance issues effectively
  • Ability to adapt to changing operational and site conditions
  • Team-oriented with good interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of working within operational environments such as treatment plants and pump stations
  • Knowledge of Traffic Management requirements when working within FRA carriageways (advantageous)
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal teams and stakeholders
  • Ability to provide practical technical input for facility improvements
