About Our Organisation

The Water Authority of Fiji is a corporate body established under the Water Authority of Fiji Act 2007 to make provision for the effective management and administration of the Water and the wastewater systems.

We are responsible for providing access to quality drinking water and wastewater services to over 159,000 and 33,540 residential and non-residential metered customers in the urban areas of Fiji and also setting up water supply systems in rural areas.

Position Objective

The Technician (Mechanical) is responsible for carrying out the installation, inspection, servicing, maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of mechanical equipment and associated assets that support WAF's water supply and wastewater systems. The role ensures the safe, reliable and efficient operation of critical mechanical infrastructure, including pumps, generators, motors, compressors, blowers, scrapers and associated plant, through the delivery of planned, preventative and corrective maintenance in compliance with WAF Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS), statutory requirements and industry best practices.

The position also supports emergency response, asset reliability, operational continuity and continuous improvement initiatives to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of safe, reliable and sustainable water and wastewater services across Fiji. This position reports directly to the Supervisor – Mechanical.

Key Accountabilities
  • Effective planned preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance and reactive maintenance implemented for Mechanical Plant & Assets.
  • Maintenance, servicing and testing performed efficiently and systematically at specified intervals.
    • Safe activation and isolation of Diesel Generators for testing both on and off load.
    • Carry out conditional monitoring for Pump and Motor Vibration and Thermal Hot Spots.
      • Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) practices strictly followed
    • Technical matters which require attention highlighted and fixed
  • LOTO practice strictly followed.
    • Safe isolation and tests performed, and confirmation provided before any works on mechanical assets.
    • Permit to Work authorisation and Hazard identification carried out
  • Installations, maintenance and commissioning of domestic and industrial installations performed and facilitated in accordance with AUS & NZ standards
    • commissioning of water, wastewater pumps, plants, equipment and generators performed
    • Water disruption prevented through regular maintenance of WAF Pumps, Generators, Compressors, Blowers and Scrapers.
    • Task completed with high level of competency to ensure long term resiliency.
    • Worksite and Workshop kept clean and tidy with identified risks mitigated.
  • Maintenance of overhead hoist, cranes in the treatment plants and pump stations attended to in a timely and professional manner with inspection and completion reports furnished and filed for record keeping.
  • Provide assistance to colleagues on daily tasks assigned and compliance to OHS regulations when performing tasks.
  • Safety regulations are always observed in work sites.
  • Work sites are kept clean and safe for the pump attendants and members of the public
  • Knowledge on how to use relevant and required works tools obtained and understood and are competently used to performed duties and work assigned.
  • Flexibility to change demonstrated and work prioritised in line with complaints received.
  • Work order & record keeping of faults and major repairs works attended too and completed.
  • Timely and quality daily reports and records on all works carried out of all repairs done and materials used submitted to supervisors and are fully informed of;

    • operation inputs for the smooth running of the Mechanical department
  • Efficient and effective repair methods and maintenance ensured.
    • Maintenance schedules of all mechanical equipment in the division executed efficiently
  • Inventory management of fittings, parts, mechanical components and critical spares coordinated effectively with superiors/ storeman.
    • availability of required inventory always maintained.
  • Coordinating with Technicians from other subunits as instructed on SOP's for troubleshooting and diagnosing, as well as executing project.
  • Monitoring and reporting on operations efficiency of systems installed and maintenance requirements provided to superiors.
  • Full compliance with all internal and regulatory requirements always maintained:
    • Statutory and regulatory compliant
    • Compliant with operational procedures
    • Risk compliant
  • All internal and external (if any) reporting requirements in relation to the outcomes of this role understood and correctly executed
    • Robust and relevant periodic reports/documents prepared and submitted as and when requested. This includes daily Plant performance reports and any other and daily/ weekly/ monthly Reports as requested.
    • Superiors provided with useful information combined with analysis and interpretation, for the purpose of decision making.
  • Ad-hoc information request by superiors addressed in a timely manner.
  • Cooperation within the team and greater function / department encouraged.
  • Cooperation across functions / departments ensured.
  • Collaboration and leadership to achieve relevant organisational targets and goals.
    • Other related duties assigned by the Technical Officer effectively and efficiently addressed.

  • Thorough understanding and execution of M&E Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) ensured.

  • Accurate and timely reporting of near miss and incidents to superiors.
  • Contribute to Team Meetings providing input and insight. Meetings are attended with relevant and effective contributions.
  • Initiative to improve performance and resolution of complaints in the Work Management System.
  • Uphold and maintain high quality of works minimizing instances of poor workmanship or rework to zero.
  • Provide relevant and timely updates on works assigned by superiors
  • Carry out any other duties assigned by the Supervisor or Team Leader.
Qualification and Experience Requirement
  • The Applicant must possess a Certificate III in Plant Maintenance, or Welding & Fabrication, or Fitting & Machining, or Engineering - Mechanical Trade (Maintenance) or Diesel Fitting Pathway (MEM30205) with at least 3 years of industrial experience in mechanical installation and maintenance works, preferably on Pumps, Generators and/or Diesel engines.
Skills and Abilities
  • Possess well developed skills to plan using a systematic approach, to ensure that actions are initiated and results are achieved within the required timeline.
  • General knowledge of the purpose and operations of water utilities.
  • Proven ability to work independently and under minimum supervision and willing to work on shifts and public holidays.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with the team to achieve desired results.
  • Ability to handle complex and unplanned tasks.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Ability to identify and understand best practices in mechanical works.
  • Ability to systematically diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical faults on variety of machines and equipment.
  • Experienced on safe handling of power tools and equipment.
  • Understanding Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor, prioritize, respond and control effectively in operational situati
