About Our Organisation

The Water Authority of Fiji is a corporate body established under the Water Authority of Fiji Act 2007 to make provision for the effective management and administration of the Water and the wastewater systems.

We are responsible for providing access to quality drinking water and wastewater services to over 159,000 and 33,540 residential and non-residential metered customers in the urban areas of Fiji and also setting up water supply systems in rural areas.

Position Objective

The Technician - Carpenter is responsible for performing a wide range of carpentry, construction, repair, maintenance, and rehabilitation works across existing and new infrastructure. The role supports the delivery of safe, functional, and high-quality structures within WAF’s wastewater facilities, pump stations, and related assets. Reporting to the Technical Officer, the position also assists with general labour tasks when required to ensure efficient and effective operations. The Carpenter contributes to timely completion of reactive and preventative maintenance activities, compliance with safety and operational standards, and overall organisational performance.

Key Accountabilities
  1. Delivery of Carpentry Services effectively and efficiently
    • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, sketches, and technical specifications.
    • Take accurate measurements and estimate materials, tools, and resources required for tasks.
    • Construct, repair, and maintain wooden and structural components, including:
      • Doors, windows, platforms, roofs, partitions, access ways, staircases, and timber structures.
      • Formwork for concrete structures (e.g., slabs, chambers, manholes).
      • Custom fittings such as safety barriers, pump covers, and equipment mounts.
    • Carry out carpentry works for wastewater infrastructure including treatment plants, pump stations, and water asset chambers.
    • Assist in the construction of building layouts, scaffolding, concrete reinforcement profiles, and temporary structures.
    • Perform assigned inspections, repairs, rehabilitation, and maintenance works to meet quality and safety standards.
    • Perform maintenance and planned preventative maintenance water authority infrastructures to ensure its longevity.
    • Support the delivery of Reactive and Preventative Maintenance Programs.
  2. Maintenance of Wastewater Facilities & Support to Maintenance Teams
    • Conduct general building and structural maintenance for all wastewater facilities and pump stations.
    • Assist Pump Technicians and Reactive Maintenance teams with infrastructure-related repairs, including emergency or after-hours call-outs.
    • Provide rapid formwork, temporary access structures, and urgent carpentry support during breakdowns, flooding, overflows, or structural failures.
    • Replace deteriorated timber components exposed to corrosive or harsh environments.
  3. Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
    • Comply with WAF OHS policies, SOPs, building codes, reinstatement standards, and safety bylaws.
    • Participate in toolbox meetings, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and risk assessments.
    • Ensure safe operation, storage, and maintenance of all carpentry tools, equipment, and materials.
    • Follow environmental and hygiene protocols related to wastewater operations.
  4. Work Planning, Reporting & Resource Management
    • Maintain daily work logs, material usage reports, and progress updates.
    • Record and store all carpentry documentation, including maintenance records, financial documents, and administrative paperwork.
    • Assist with stock management, including proper storage and tracking of tools, equipment, and materials.
    • Ensure all tasks are completed within allocated budgets and timelines.
    • Support preventative maintenance planning and minor upgrade works.
  5. Teamwork, Collaboration & Organisational Contribution
    • Demonstrate effective communication and teamwork within the maintenance teams and across departments.
    • Provide support to technical officers and collaborate with other internal functions to achieve operational targets.
    • Perform other duties assigned by the Technical Officer in a timely and efficient manner.
    • Uphold WAF organisational values, good governance practices, and customer-focused service delivery
Qualification and Experience Requirement
  • The Applicant must either possess a Certificate III in Carpentry with at least 3 years of relevant work experience
    AND/OR
  • Trade Test Certificate (Class III) Carpenter General with at least 2 years of relevant work experience
Skills and Abilities
  • Experience with safely operating power tools and equipment with appropriate PPE
  • Understanding of Traffic Management Plans and Practices while working within the FRA Carriage Way
  • Understanding Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) and practices;
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor, prioritize, respond and control effectively in operational situation
  • Experience in prioritizing tasks to efficiently utilize resources and demonstrate initiative and strategic approach in coping with unexpected situations.
  • Initiative to undertake necessary corrective action with minimal supervision
  • Ability to adapt to changing operational situations by understanding system behaviour and performance
  • Excellent understanding of carpentry techniques and methods of installation and construction
  • Proficient in using electrical and manual equipment and measurement tools (powered saws, hammers, rulers, concrete mixtures, jack hammers, compactors etc.)
  • For carpenters working on dams, water tanks etc., at least 3 years’ experience in rural carpentry works for water supply services.
  • Knowledge of constructing water dams and water tanks [Ferro Cement] and water Works/general plumbing works will be added advantage
  • Ability to read technical documents and drawings for the purpose of successfully carrying out carpentry outcomes
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts
  • Ability to provide technical advice and expertise
  • The candidate should have at least a valid group 2 driving license
