About Our Organisation

The Water Authority of Fiji is a corporate body established under the Water Authority of Fiji Act 2007 to make provision for the effective management and administration of the Water and the wastewater systems.

We are responsible for providing access to quality drinking water and wastewater services to over 159,000 and 33,540 residential and non-residential metered customers in the urban areas of Fiji and also setting up water supply systems in rural areas.

Position Objective

The Technician - Wastewater Treatment is responsible for assisting the Technical Officer Wastewater Treatment with the provision of sound advice relating to Wastewater processes and compliance requirements within WAF. This responsibility includes facilitating and improving the provisioning of wastewater treatment and network services, monitor and maintain the treatment and safe discharge of effluent and bio solids, inspection, audit, verification and maintenance of wastewater treatment and network infrastructure in accordance with best practices. The position reports to Technical Officer - Wastewater Treatment.

Key Accountabilities
  • Effective and efficient operations of Wastewater Network & Treatment Plant in the respective system.
  • Conduct fault classification as per WAF Fault Classification Dashboards
  • Resolve customer complaints as per WAF Customer Charter
  • Conduct routine checks and inspections across WAF’s Wastewater Pumping Stations
  • Maintain clean and safe working environment within and around Pump Station Sites
  • Inspect, service and repair components of the Wastewater Pumping Stations including pipe works, wet well and guide rails, fencing and gantry support, switchboards, valves and pits and report to Technical Officer.
  • Ensure minimal overflow of wastewater overflows from wastewater networks.
  • Ensure security of Wastewater Pumping Station sites.
  • Conduct regular, unblocking, flushing, and bailing programs for WAF’s Wastewater Networks and pipelines.
  • Carry out General Housekeeping
  • Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) works and general maintenance works carried out effectively and in a timely manner
  • Close collaboration with other WAF departments/ units ensured to efficiently resolved customer complaints
  • Scheduled of works executed in a timely manner as per department plant including Repair & Maintenance, Operations, Planned Preventative Maintenance, Upgrade, Flushing, and Cleaning of Mains and Appurtenances
  • Relevant complaints successfully and efficiently addressed and Work Order Form for each complaint duly completed accurately and in a timely fashion:
    • Appropriate complaints management records maintained
    • Complaints reporting requirements complied with at all times
    • Complaints data analysis undertaken and key observations noted reported to superiors
  • Record information and location data on pipelines to ensure the wastewater system on WAF’s Geographic Information System (GIS) is updated regularly
  • Work schedule and shift duties successfully delivered
  • Cooperation within the team and greater function / department achieved.
  • Cooperation across functions / departments ensured.
  • Worked collaboratively to achieve the set targets and goals.
  • Compliance with operational procedures (SOP) ensured.
  • OHS Policy and procedures complied with
  • Non-compliance reports escalated in a timely manner.
  • Support toward the alignment of deliverables to organizational values and strategic directions ensured.
  • Conduct repair woks for minor and major pipeline bursts and collapses.
  • Submit Weekly Operational Data to Technical Officer for the WWTP Dashboards.
  • Inspect influent inflow at the treatment plant.
  • Inspect & monitor the pump stations to prevent overflow.
  • Carry out driving duties for the respective Wastewater Treatment Plant & Wastewater Reticulation teams to assist with logistics and daily attendance of repairs and maintenance works.
  • Ensure possession and proper use of essential tools required for repair and maintenance activities as it is a mandatory requirement for the role.
  • Carry out any other duties assigned by the Supervisor or Team Leader.
Qualification and Experience Requirement
  • The applicant must possess Certificate III in Plumbing & Sheet Metal or Plant Engineering or Electrical Engineering and/or Mechanical Engineering with at least three (3) years relevant experience
    OR
  • Trade Test Certificate Class III in Pipe Fitter or Plumber (General) with at least two (2) relevant experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Must be mentally and physically fit.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a Team or unsupervised.
  • Experience with safely operating power tools and equipment with appropriate PPE
  • Understanding of Traffic Management Plans and Practices while working within the FRA Carriage Way.
  • Understanding Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) and practices
  • General knowledge of the purpose and operations of water and wastewater utilities
  • Ability to adapt to changing operational situations by understanding system behavior and performance.
  • Working knowledge as well as experience with MS Office software together with good and timely report writing skills.
  • Must have a valid driving license.
