The Water Authority of Fiji is a corporate body established under the Water Authority of Fiji Act 2007 to make provision for the effective management and administration of the Water and the wastewater systems.
We are responsible for providing access to quality drinking water and wastewater services to over 159,000 and 33,540 residential and non-residential metered customers in the urban areas of Fiji and also setting up water supply systems in rural areas.
The Technician – Wastewater Treatment Plant is responsible for supporting the safe, efficient and reliable operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plant and wastewater network infrastructure to ensure the effective collection, treatment and environmentally compliant discharge of treated wastewater effluent. The role undertakes routine operational monitoring, planned preventative maintenance, fault response, customer service activities and asset inspections to maintain service continuity, protect public health and the environment, and ensure compliance with WAF policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS), and relevant regulatory requirements. The position reports to the Technical Officer – Wastewater Treatment Plant.
- Plant Operations & Maintenance
- Ensure the effective and efficient operation of the wastewater network and treatment plant in the respective system.
- Inspect, service, repair and maintain components of the Wastewater Treatment Plant, including pipe works, aeration tanks, clarifier fencing, switchboards, valves, pits and other facilities within the plant, and report findings to the Technical Officer.
- Inspect influent inflow at the treatment plant.
- Inspect and monitor pump stations to prevent overflows and conduct routine checks and inspections across WAF's wastewater pumping stations.
- Carry out Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) works, and general maintenance works effectively and in a timely manner.
- Ensure the security of the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
- Network Maintenance & Fault Response
- Conduct repair works for minor and major pipeline bursts and collapses.
- Conduct regular unblocking, flushing and bailing programs for WAF's wastewater treatment facilities and pipelines.
- Ensure minimal overflows from wastewater networks.
- Conduct fault classification as per the WAF Fault Classification Dashboards.
- Execute scheduled works in a timely manner as per the department plan, including repair and maintenance, operations, planned preventative maintenance, upgrades, and flushing and cleaning of mains and appurtenances.
- Customer Complaints & Service
- Resolve customer complaints in accordance with the WAF Customer Charter and collaborate closely with other WAF departments and units to resolve complaints efficiently.
- Ensure relevant complaints are successfully and efficiently addressed, with the Work Order Form for each complaint completed accurately and in a timely fashion:
- Appropriate complaints management records maintained;
- Complaints reporting requirements complied with at all times;
- Complaints data analysed and key observations reported to superiors.
- Data, Records & Reporting
- Record information and location data on pipelines to ensure the wastewater system on WAF's Geographic Information System (GIS) is updated regularly.
- Submit weekly operational data to the Technical Officer for the WWTP Dashboards.
- Escalate non-compliance reports in a timely manner.
- Occupational Health & Safety (OHS)
- Comply with, and actively support the implementation of, WAF's Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Management System, policies and procedures at all times.
- Ensure compliance with operational procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices, including the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment within and around the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
- Maintain good housekeeping standards at the plant, pump stations and work sites at all times, and carry out general housekeeping duties.
- Report hazards, incidents and near-misses in accordance with WAF OHS reporting requirements.
- Logistics & Tools
- Carry out driving duties for the respective Wastewater Treatment Plant and Wastewater Reticulation teams to assist with logistics and the daily attendance of repair and maintenance works.
- Ensure possession and proper use of essential tools required for repair and maintenance activities, as this is a mandatory requirement of the role.

- Be able and willing to work on any other assigned tasks and carry out any other duties assigned by the Supervisor or Team Leader.
- The Applicant must possess a Certificate III in Plumbing & Sheet Metal, Plant Engineering, Electrical Engineering and/or Mechanical Engineering, with at least three (3) years of relevant experience
OR - Trade Test Certificate Class III in Pipe Fitter or Plumber (General), with at least two (2) years of relevant experience
OR - A valid Electrician's Licence or Certificate III in Electrical, with at least three (3) years of relevant work experience
- Ability to meet the inherent physical requirements of the role, including outdoor work, lifting and working in operational plant environments.
- Proven ability to work effectively in a team or unsupervised.
- Experience in safely operating power tools and equipment with appropriate PPE.
- Understanding of Traffic Management Plans and practices while working within the FRA carriageway.
- Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) and practices, with a demonstrated commitment to complying with WAF's OHS Management System.
- General knowledge of the purpose and operations of water and wastewater utilities.
- Ability to adapt to changing operational situations by understanding system behaviour and performance.
- Working knowledge of, and experience with, MS Office software, together with good and timely report-writing skills.
- Strong electrical knowledge and the ability to use, repair and maintain electrical equipment.
- Must hold a valid driving licence.
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends and emergency callouts as required, and to always maintain good housekeeping and safe work standards.
